This study places Kipling's fiction in its original cultural, intellectual and historical contexts, exploring the impact of India, America, South Africa and Edwardian England on his imperialist narratives. Drawing on manuscripts, journalism and unpublished writings, Hagiioannu uncovers the historical significance and hidden meanings of a broad range of Kipling's stories, extending the discussion from the best-known works to a number of less familiar tales. Through a combination of close textual analysis and lively historical coverage, The Man Who Would Be Kipling suggests that Kipling's political ideas and narrative modes are more subtly connected with lived experience and issues of cultural environment than critics have formerly recognized.

By placing some of Blake's early prophetic works in startingly new historical contexts (most provocatively those of female conduct and pornography) a very different image of the radical Blake emerges. The book shows what can be achieved when a challenging methodology, feminist historicism, is brought to bear on a canonical writer and on now canonized interpretations of his work.

This book is available in ePub and PDF format with a single click unlimited downloads. Civil War officer, Reconstruction "carpetbagger," best-selling novelist, and relentless champion of equal rights--Albion Tourg?e battled his entire life for racial justice. Now, in this engaging biography, Mark Elliott offers an insightful portrait of a fearless lawyer, jurist, and writer, who fought for equality long after most Americans had abandoned the ideals of Reconstruction. Elliott provides a fascinating account of Tourg?e's life, from his childhood in the Western Reserve region of Ohio (then a hotbed of abolitionism), to his years as a North Carolina judge during Reconstruction, to his memorable role as lead plaintiff's counsel in the landmark Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson. Tourg?e's brief coined the phrase that justice should be "color-blind," and his career was one long campaign to make good on that belief. A redoubtable lawyer and an accomplished jurist, Tourg?e's writings represent a mountain of dissent against the prevailing tide of racial oppression. A poignant and inspiring study in courage and conviction, Color-Blind Justice offers us an unforgettable portrayal of Albion Tourg?e and the principles to which he dedicated his life.

This book is available in ePub and PDF format with a single click unlimited downloads. This is a story of how a sages staff that blossomed in white petals two thousand years ago gave the Earth and humanity a valuable spiritual nudge in 2054. The sage was Joseph of Arimathea, famous for providing a tomb for the crucified Jesus. But hes also legendary for arriving in Celtic Glastonbury in the first century AD, where he established the first Apostolic church in Britain. Joseph also introduced the Grail Knight Fellowship and the Christ Light transmission. Immortal, hes been the chief magus of the Quest for the Holy Grail ever since and the leader of an esoteric academy spanning the centuries that trains people to use the authentic Christ Light to rebalance the planet. It all comes down to a flowering white staff, and its a staff made of Light. Its blossoms are blazing diamond-white fire, and its called the White Crown. But Joseph is not the only one with a staff. All Grail Knights have one, and thats how they combine Christ alignment with Earth energies, as Edward Burbage found out. Hes an established Boston book editor who sets off with two companions on a four-year immersion in the powers and uses of the flowering white staff. The story begins in the year 2050, and the world is still reorganizing itself along better lines than it has seen in millennia since the Golden Age finally began in 2020. But it still needs a few expert nudges from the white staff to keep it on track. Edwards initiation into how you do this with the white staffs power takes him to Nebraska, Iowa, Glastonbury, Ireland, Gozo, and Greece. Along the way, he learns the true story of the Holy Grail, how Irelands original gods brought the Grail from the Andromeda Galaxy, and how their allies, the famously enigmatic 24 Elders, guide the Earths secret destiny. But Edward will have to deal with their enemy, Klingsor, the trickiest, nastiest, most deviously clever Grail Killer.

This book is available in ePub and PDF format with a single click unlimited downloads. During the Progressive Era, young working-class women were sometimes jailed for engaging in social and sexual activities that signaled their rejection of Victorian moral standards. These disadvantaged "delinquents" were subject to legal sanctions that were rarely applied to rebellious middle-class girls. As she traces the history of a social crisis that came to be known as the "girl problem", Ruth M. Alexander reconstructs the stories of individual women incarcerated in reformatories who helped redefine female adolescence in the United States. Alexander draws on the rich case files of reformatories at Bedford Hills and Albion, New York. Bringing together writings by the young inmates, letters from their parents, and institutional records, she follows the histories of a hundred girls as they run afoul of the law, are incarcerated, and struggle to reenter society. From the interplay among girls, families, courts, and penal institutions emerges a fascinating picture of class inequality and culture conflict. Alexander finds that most delinquent young women eventually accepted the idea that freedom was best won by conformity and accommodation. In showing how a new social problem was identified and tackled, Alexander also documents the emergence of the modern professions of social work and mental hygiene. Reenacting a key chapter in the transformation of adolescence, The "Girl Problem" contributes to the history of sexuality and social reform through the Progressive Era and beyond.

This book is available in ePub and PDF format with a single click unlimited downloads. Britain's vote to leave the European Union in the summer of 2016 came as a shock to many observers. But writers had long been exploring anxieties and fractures in British society – from Euroscepticism, to immigration, to devolution, to post-truth narratives – that came to the fore in the Brexit campaign and its aftermath. Reading these tensions back into contemporary British writing, Kristian Shaw coins the term Brexlit to deliver the first in-depth study of how writers engaged with these issues before and after the referendum result. Examining the work of over a hundred British authors, including Julian Barnes, Jonathan Coe, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Ali Smith, as well as popular fiction by Andrew Marr and Stanley Johnson, Brexlit explores how a new and urgent genre of post-Brexit fiction is beginning to emerge.
